12/1 update

I have revised the plan by dropping the hill to the third floor and the fourth floor (roof) now features a viewing balcony. The hill is at an ideal slope for recreation and I have placed two slides for small children to full enjoy the hill.

The planter walls have been extended to wrap around the building, starting from the bottom of the hill.

I still need to do some final revisions to the back of the building as I am experimenting with placing strip windows and/or a full wall louver system.

At this point, the creation of my final 1/8th model will be prioritized…sleep/food will not be.

11/26 project update

I have been refining my latest design (in portfolio images). I have been mainly working in hand drawings and digital media in order to quickly generate new ideas for the slope. Similar to the raised concrete siding in Zaha Hadid’s Formation One Building, I am experimenting with adding a raised planter that will act as railing along the slopes. I want to incorporate some sort of siting area at the end. I want to also add a screen of greenery extending from the green house to the side of the ramp/elevator shaft to add shade from direct sunlight.

I will start to create a 3d model of the building in Architecture Revit (with some components created in Rhino) soon. I may also be starting another model of my building as an intermediary step before I start my final model. I am still wondering what materials I want to use for my final model, especially for the green roof and the walls. I will be soldering for my final model for the glass siding and elevator shaft. I also have some more last research  for some systems I want to use, such as turfstone and fiber optics for lighting.

Danussa’s Mid-Review

I think your strategy of showing the relationship of the main street and the secondary street is really strong, especially through your study of the street and frame of trees from the photos from the top of the parking lot. This connection of the place made an interesting relationship of your 1/32 model with your knot model in order to demonstrate circulation as voids in the model. You also had a good idea with creating two paths to one point, but this should be more articulated and extended throughout the entire project. Although, your 1/8 model was intended to be more diagrammatic, Melissa really enjoyed the spaces that were connected and intertwined like your knot, and thus it should be developed as your actual design for the building. The concept of cut and placing was also received positively; however, you could start experimenting with using semi-transparent materials. For example, try different glazing to create contrast with the glass and more solid mass. Melissa also suggested using different materials instead of balsa wood for modeling because balsa doesn’t represent massing very well. Again, this is an opportunity to experiment with materials with various degrees of transparencies. It was also pointed out that you should reexamine your design in plan to ensure that your programs are spacious enough in your building (she said you bike shop seemed too thin). Overall, your concepts are really effective; just make sure the composition is equally as strong.
